Mapping Eigg
2014
Drawings
Outcome from a residency at Sweeney’s bothy on the Isle of Eigg, as part of the Life Off the Grid project led by Dr Alice Street (Edinburgh University) and in partnership with The Bothy Project.
Inspired by the story of an infamous lost map on the island, the project aimed to examine how maps are perceived and used on the island. I was particularly interested in exploring how maps offer opportunity for storytelling and describe specific realities through graphic forms. During the residency I met with local people to consider how the island has been mapped and was especially drawn to the schematic network map of the island’s community-owned electricity grid.
This series of drawings can be considered as experimental maps which focus on memory and experience to describe place and spatial relationships. The resulting compositions aim to represent particular narratives from conversations, journeys and observations made during the residency whilst referencing locations, routes and elements of visible/invisible infrastructure.
Screen prints of these works are currently available to view at V&A Dundee.
